SASSA grant increases for 2025 real? 

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) provides financial assistance to millions of South Africans through various grants.

In the 2025 Budget Speech, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced increases in SASSA grants to help beneficiaries cope with the rising cost of living.

Grant Increases for 2025

Here are the new grant amounts effective from April 1, 2025 ¹:

  • Old Age Grant: Increased from R2185 to R2315 (R130 increase)
  • War Veterans Grant: Increased from R2205 to R2335 (R130 increase)
  • Disability Grant: Increased from R2185 to R2315 (R130 increase)
  • Foster Care Grant: Increased from R1180 to R1250 (R70 increase)
  • Care Dependency Grant: Increased from R2185 to R2315 (R130 increase)
  • Child Support Grant: Increased from R530 to R560 (R30 increase)
  • Grant-in-Aid: Increased from R530 to R560 (R30 increase)

SRD Grant Update

The Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant, introduced during the Covid-19 pandemic, will continue with its current monthly payment of R370.

The government has allocated R35.2 billion to maintain this payment, including administration costs, until March 2026.

Budget Allocation

The Department of Social Development has been allocated R422.3 billion for 2025/26, projected to rise to R452.7 billion by 2027/28.

This funding supports poverty reduction, social insurance, and welfare services.
