The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) provides financial assistance to students in South Africa through the NSFAS bursary and NSFAS loan.
This funding covers tuition and registration fees, as well as allowances for food, accommodation, and learning materials.
Applying for NSFAS Allowances in 2025
Step 1: Creating a myNSFAS Account
To apply for NSFAS funding, students must first create a myNSFAS account on the NSFAS website.
This is done by clicking on the ‘myNSFAS’ tab and following the registration process.
Step 2: Submitting an Online Application
Once a myNSFAS account is created, students can submit an online application by clicking on the ‘APPLY’ tab and completing the required sections.
Supporting documents may be requested and must be uploaded to complete the application.
Checking Application Status
After submitting an application, students should regularly check their NSFAS status by logging in to their myNSFAS account and clicking on the “Track Funding Progress” option.
Eligibility Checks
NSFAS will conduct eligibility checks to confirm whether the applicant qualifies for funding.
Students who fail the household income check may be assessed for an NSFAS student loan.
Immediate Funding Decisions
Funding decisions will be made immediately for applicants who are beneficiaries of South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) grants.
Funding Outcomes
Students will be notified of their funding outcome, which may include:
- Approval for funding
- Request for supporting documents
- Decline of funding
Submitting an Appeal
Students who are rejected from NSFAS funding can submit an appeal.
