The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has announced its approved academic pathways for 2025, outlining the qualifications and progression routes that will be funded for university and TVET college students.
Academic Progression
Academic progression refers to moving from one qualification to a higher one within the same field of study. NSFAS recognizes specific progression pathways at both universities and TVET colleges, and understanding these pathways is crucial for students to maintain their funding eligibility.
University Academic Progression
NSFAS will only fund progression from a certificate qualification to an undergraduate qualification. This applies only to a student’s first certificate or undergraduate qualification. If a student has already received NSFAS funding for a certificate, they will not be funded for another certificate program.
TVET College Academic Progression
TVET college students can only progress from a Pre-Learning Programme (PLP) to a Report 191 Level 1 or NC(V) Level 2 qualification. Switching between NC(V) and Report 191 programs, or changing programs within them, can make a student ineligible for further funding.
Key Exceptions and Rules
- Students who complete NC(V) Level 4 or Report 191 N4-N6 will not be eligible for further NSFAS funding for other NC(V) or Report 191 programs.
- First-time entrants (FTF) can change their program within the first academic term without affecting their funding eligibility.
By understanding the approved academic pathways for 2025, students can plan their academic careers effectively and make informed decisions about their qualifications and progression routes.
