The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) offers various grants to support vulnerable members of society.
The Special COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant is one such initiative, providing financial assistance to individuals affected by the pandemic.
To ensure seamless communication and efficient service delivery, SASSA requires applicants to provide a valid cell phone number.
However, situations may arise where an SRD grant beneficiary needs to change their registered cell number without access to their Application ID.
Updating Personal Details on the SRD Grant System
Beneficiaries of the SRD grant can update their personal details, including their cell phone number, through the SASSA website or by contacting the SASSA call center.
To do so, they typically need to provide their Application ID, which serves as a unique identifier for their SRD grant application.
However, in cases where the beneficiary has misplaced or forgotten their Application ID, alternative methods are available.
Changing Cell Number via the SASSA Website
To change their cell number without an Application ID, SRD grant beneficiaries can follow these steps:
Visit the SASSA website and click on the “SRD Grant” tab.
Select “Application Status” and then click on “Update Personal Details.”
Fill in the required fields, including the new cell phone number.
Since the Application ID is not available, the beneficiary will need to provide alternative identification documents, such as their South African ID number or passport number.
Once the updated information is submitted, SASSA will verify the details and update the beneficiary’s records accordingly.
Changing Cell Number via the SASSA Call Center
Alternatively, SRD grant beneficiaries can contact the SASSA call center to request a change in their registered cell phone number.
The call center agent will request identification information, such as the beneficiary’s name, South African ID number, or passport number, to verify their identity.
Once verified, the agent will assist with updating the cell phone number on the SRD grant system.
Changing Cell Number via the SASSA WhatsApp Channel
SASSA also offers a WhatsApp channel for SRD grant beneficiaries to update their personal details, including their cell phone number.
To use this method, beneficiaries can send a WhatsApp message to the SASSA WhatsApp number (082 046 8553) with their name, South African ID number, and new cell phone number.
A SASSA representative will then contact the beneficiary to verify their identity and update their records.
Changing Cell Number via the SASSA Office
In some cases, SRD grant beneficiaries may need to visit their local SASSA office in person to update their cell phone number.
This may be necessary if the beneficiary is unable to access the SASSA website or contact the call center.
When visiting the SASSA office, the beneficiary should bring identification documents, such as their South African ID or passport, and proof of their new cell phone number.
A SASSA representative will then assist with updating the beneficiary’s records.
Security Measures to Prevent Fraud
To prevent fraudulent activities and ensure the integrity of the SRD grant system, SASSA has implemented various security measures.
These measures include verifying the identity of beneficiaries through their identification documents and contact details.
Beneficiaries are advised to keep their personal details, including their cell phone number, up to date to ensure uninterrupted communication with SASSA.
